Our flagship safe gig space policy!

Northern Parasol events are open & inclusive to all, everyone is welcome and we hope everyone has a great time! To that end, we created ‘Stop The Set’ as a policy to tackle anti-social behaviour in the nightlife economy.

What is Stop The Set Call It Out?

Northern Parasol has a zero-tolerance policy toward any form of discrimination, creepy or anti-social behaviour.

It is horrific that creepy, discriminatory and anti-social behaviour can be commonplace on nights out. It is equally horrific that spiking is a risk to everyone who are out to enjoy themselves.

Northern Parasol created and enforces Stop The Set to fight this.

In the event that someone is being made to feel uncomfortable or we believe that someone is in danger, Northern Parasol will halt the show until the issue can be resolved.

In practice this will result in:

  • The sound engineer being informed of the issue and told to cut the sound.

  • The artist will be told to stop performing. In some cases, the artist may be asked to address the crowd to alert them to the issue.

  • The main lights in the venue will be switched back on.

  • The show will remain halted until the issue is resolved. Security or venue staff may enter the venue area in order to remove any individual deemed to breaching this policy.

  • The person who was at risk or being made to feel uncomfortable will be removed from harms way and supported as best we can. In some cases, the emergency services will be called.

  • The person in breach of this policy will be removed, not refunded and blacklisted from all future Northern Parasol events. In the event of criminal activity being suspected, the Police will be called.

  • Once the issue has been resolved, the show can resume.

How to help ‘Stop The Set’?

Whether you are performing or in the audience, you can help Stop The Set.

If you are performing, you can:

  • Use your microphone! If you suspect anyone in the audience is in harms way or being made to feel uncomfortable, call it out! This can help alert us and the venue staff to the issue.

  • Co-operate with us if we decide to halt the show!

If you are in the audience you can be an ‘active bystander’. This means you might be able to help get someone out of an uncomfortable situation. Maybe you can start a conversation with the person at risk (‘Didn’t we know each other in college?’ for example) or maybe you can stand between them and the person who is causing an issue?

Do not put yourself in harms way. If you don’t feel comfortable stepping in, simply alert Northern Parasol or the venue staff to the issue, and we can take it from there!

In summary, it could be your friend or band member being made to feel uncomfortable. Some things are more important than a gig, keep yourself & others safe to keep live music inclusive for all.

It goes without saying, but here it is, if you do anything that is in breach of this policy (being a creep), you will be removed, you will not be paid and you will be blacklisted from any further Northern Parasol event.

Don’t be a dick. Or we will Stop The Set & Call It Out.
